Side Braid, The Spring Hair Craze

Models often hit the catwalks with hairstyles that would never translate to real life, but a side braid shown with Alexander Wang's fashions this year will make that leap.

Known as the most influential hair-stylist in the world for his work with celebrities and designers, Guido has created a work of art that isn't hard to pull off for anyone with a little braiding experience and enough hair.

Guido calls this a stylish look, the perfect blend of sporty and sexy.

Fashion writers have also taken note, especially of the fact that the style isn't the sleek, over-done hair that often comes from fashion shows. Some say the look is messy and dirty. This kind kind of styling could be done after going for a swim, a night out or after days of not shampooing.

Even if your hair isn't fresh washed and blown out, you can start with it. Just comb your hair back, part your hair to one side, pull the front layers forward and tease them, pull longer hair to one side and braid it loosely.

If you want to work at it a bit more, start with fresh washed hair. Guido recommends spreading mousse through your hair and then blow drying it while tossing it around with your hands for a rough texture. Other stylists recommend sea-salt spray, then parting your hair to one side and blow drying with a round brush in sections while sweeping the hair to one side and concentrating on root lift.

After your hair has dried, start braiding at the nape. If there are shorter layers around your face, let them hang loose. You can start with a little French braiding to catch shorter strands aside from the traditional, three-strand plait which braiding consists of. Braid from low on the side to about two inches from the ends of your hair. Keeping the braid loose will give you that bohemian touch.

For this type of hair style, the longer your hair, the better, if you don't have enough hair to braid, consider using hair extension that runway models with short hair use.

Use snag free elastic and drape it over your shoulder opposite the part to secure the braid. Even though the look is designed to look undone, stylists recommend finishing with a fine mist of hairspray.

Try it out. When you're at home, wear it. It should work well with the latest spring clothes such as sweats or denims. Ask your stylist to do it for you if you are having a difficult time with it. This is the style that works for both the spring and summer, even after it pulls loose.
